A Family Adventure in Copenhagen: Tips for Traveling with a Baby

Our recent trip to Denmark was an absolute dream, and Copenhagen proved to be a perfect destination for a family adventure. Traveling with a baby can be challenging, but this city made it easier and more enjoyable than we could have imagined. Here’s a rundown of our experience, from the best time to visit to baby-friendly activities, dining options, and essential packing tips.

Best Time of Year to Visit Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit with a baby is during the late spring and early fall (May to September). The weather is mild, with plenty of sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Summer is also great for enjoying Copenhagen’s parks and playgrounds, which was the highlight of our trip!

Where to Stay in Copenhagen

We stayed in a charming Airbnb in Frederiksberg, a peaceful yet family-friendly neighborhood that was just perfect for us. It had a great balance of quiet streets and accessibility to key attractions. If you’re still deciding where to stay, here are some other great options:

  • Østerbro: Known for its green spaces and family-friendly vibe, Østerbro offers a quieter, more residential experience. Hotel options here include the sleek Hotel Rye and the stylish Adina Apartment Hotel.
  • Vesterbro: This trendy district is packed with cool cafes, restaurants, and attractions. Consider staying at Scandic Kødbyen for a modern experience or Carlton Guldsmeden for a boutique hotel with a cozy atmosphere.
  • Frederiksberg: Our choice for the trip, this area is peaceful yet close to the action. It’s a great spot if you want a balance between tranquility and accessibility.

Things to Do in Copenhagen with a Baby

Copenhagen is one of the most baby-friendly cities we’ve ever visited. Here’s a list of activities that your little one might enjoy:

  • Tivoli Gardens: This historic amusement park is a must-see for any family. We spent an entire day there. Not only were the gardens gorgeous, but there’s also a food hall (hello, Gasoline Grill Burgers!) plenty of stroller-friendly paths, rides, and plenty of playgrounds.

  • Nyhavn: You can’t go to Copenhagen and not take a stroll along Nyhavn’s iconic waterfront. We took in the colorful houses, grabbed a bite at a cozy restaurant, and soaked in the lively atmosphere while happily watching the boats.

  • Copenhagen Zoo: Located in Frederiksberg, this zoo is the perfect half-day trip. Lots of animals, wide paths, and tons of shaded areas.
  • Parks and Playgrounds: Copenhagen is dotted with parks like Fælledparken on every corner. I loved how each of the parks were beautifully architechured with different themes.

  • The Little Mermaid Statue: We didn’t have time to visit, and while this statue is more of a photo-op for adults, the walk along the Langelinie promenade is extremely stroller-friendly.
  • Botanical Garden: Another fantastic place to let your little one take in the sights.
  • The National Museum of Denmark: They have a whole children’s section that’s interactive and fun, which was perfect for us to take a break from the stroller.
  • Boat Tours: Seeing the city from the water was a peaceful way to take in the sights and see more of the city.

  • Museum of Illusions: Located right on the main street, this museum is perfect for a rainy day activity. Filled with optical illusions, brain teasers, and interactive exhibits, it’s great for entertaining both kids and adults.

Dining Out with a Baby

Dining out with a baby can be hit or miss, but Copenhagen made it so easy. Every restaurant we visited was super accommodating. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Café Bopa in Østerbro: Perfect for families, with a laid-back atmosphere and plenty of baby-friendly options.
  • Mad & Kaffe in Vesterbro: This was our go-to brunch spot. Tons of space for strollers and the staff were so helpful.
  • Granola in Frederiksberg: An old-fashioned café vibe with a great menu that everyone.
  • Gasoline Grill: If you’re craving a great burger in Copenhagen, Gasoline Grill is a must-visit! Known for its simple yet mouth-watering burgers, this spot has gained a cult following for good reason. Located inside Tivoli Gardens, it’s the perfect stop for a quick bite while enjoying the park.
  • Torvehallerne Food Market: For a mix of Danish treats, this food market was perfect. We could grab quick bites and sit at family-friendly seating.
  • Vaffelbageren: One of our favorite moments was stopping by Vaffelbageren for their famous waffles and ice cream. Perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, with just the right amount of toppings.

Getting Around

Copenhagen is incredibly stroller-friendly, which is a game-changer when you’re out and about with a baby. The pavements are smooth, and most public transport options (like buses and trains) accommodate strollers easily. Just be mindful when taking the metro—not all stations have elevators, so plan ahead! There are taxis and Ubers available but public transportation seems to be the easiest and most accommodating means of transportation.

  • Parks and Playgrounds: You’ll never be far from a park or playground in Copenhagen. Many cafes have stroller-friendly outdoor seating, allowing parents to relax while their little ones nap or play. It’s a wonderful experience to feel so welcome in public spaces—something I wish was more common back home.

Many cafes are designed with parents in mind, offering stroller-friendly outdoor seating where parents can relax while their little ones nap or play. In places like Frederiksberg, it’s common to see parents parking their strollers right outside cafes as they catch up with friends. This mirrors what you often see in Germany and Spain, where beer gardens and tapas bars are conveniently located next to playgrounds, allowing adults to socialize while keeping an eye on their children. It’s a comforting reminder of how communal spaces can make parenting easier, helping families feel welcome and at ease.

  • Pack Light: Denmark is known for its practicality, and baby gear is no exception. We found everything we needed easily in local stores, so don’t worry if you forget something.
  • Be Weather-Ready: Copenhagen’s weather can change quickly, so pack layers, a rain cover for your stroller, and always keep sunscreen on hand for those sunny days.
  • Baby Food: We packed some of his favorite snacks just in case. While there are baby-friendly food options everywhere, it’s always a good idea to have something familiar.
  • Slumberpod: We bring this on every vacation with us and has helped with overcoming jetlag and peaceful sleep for our baby.

Copenhagen was such a wonderful experience for us as a family, and we can’t wait to go back. The city’s welcoming atmosphere, combined with its baby-friendly amenities, made our trip unforgettable. If you’re considering a European adventure with your little one, Copenhagen should definitely be on your list!
