If you’re visiting Amsterdam in the spring, seeing the tulip fields is one of those bucket list experiences that actually lives up to the hype.

But what I didn’t realize before going?
There’s a right way to do it, especially with a toddler.

Between timing, transportation, and choosing the right spots, a little planning makes all the difference.

Here’s exactly how we did it—and what I’d recommend if you’re planning a family day trip to the tulip fields in the Netherlands.

Where Are the Tulip Fields in the Netherlands?

Most of the famous tulip fields are located in a region called the Bollenstreek (Flower Strip), which runs between Haarlem and Leiden, just outside of Amsterdam.

The best part? Everything is within about 30–40 minutes of Amsterdam, making it a really easy day trip.

Best Time to Visit Tulip Fields

Tulip season is short and timing matters.

Best time to visit: Mid-March to early May
Peak bloom: Mid-April
Best time of day: Early morning (right when it opens)

We made it a point to get there early and I’m so glad we did.
By mid-morning, it gets very crowded, especially at Keukenhof.

How to Get to Keukenhof Gardens

Keukenhof Gardens is located in Lisse, about 30–40 minutes from Amsterdam.

Keukenhof is one of the most famous flower gardens in the world and it’s honestly just as beautiful as you’d imagine. The best part is that it’s also extremely kid friendly.

What you’ll find:

Wide, stroller-friendly paths
Tons of open space to walk
Interactive areas for kids
Food stalls and picnic areas
Playgrounds scattered throughout

How to Do Keukenhof + Tulip Fields in One Day (With a Toddler)

If you’re visiting Keukenhof, I highly recommend pairing it with a tulip field experience and doing both in one day.

This was honestly the best decision we made.

Keukenhof is beautiful, but it’s more of a structured garden experience.
Tulip Barn gives you that “walking through the fields” moment and a more relaxed space where kids can just run around.

Here’s what worked really well for us:

We arrived at Keukenhof right when it opened
Spent a few hours walking, exploring, and letting Aydin play
Then ubered to Tulip Barn afterward for a slower, more open experience

The two are only about 10–15 minutes apart, which makes it super doable.

By the time we got to Tulip Barn, it felt like a reset. Less crowded, more space, and honestly more enjoyable for all of us after the busier morning.

If you’re planning your day, I’d structure it like this:
Keukenhof → Tulip field → back to Amsterdam

Tulip Fields You Can Actually Walk Through

This is something a lot of people don’t realize: You can’t just walk into random tulip fields.
Most are private and protected.

So if you want that “walking through the tulips” experience, you need to go to designated places.

Tulip Barn

This was one of my favorite parts of the entire day. We ubered here straight from Keukenhof. It was a quick 10 min ride.

Tulip Barn is a designated tulip field experience where you can:

Walk through the fields
Take photos
Actually enjoy the space without worrying

What’s there:

Rows of tulips you can walk through
Photo ops everywhere
Kids play areas (including a bounce house and playground with tractors)
Small marketplace
Food and drink options

It felt more like a fun family outing than a tourist attraction.

Bring snacks + water
Wear comfortable shoes
Plan time to just let your kids run around
Take advantage of the photo spots

You can even hire a photographer through their website for a family shoot, which would be so worth it.

Other Tulip Field Options Nearby

If you have extra time or want to explore more, there are a few other great options in the same area:

Tulip Experience Amsterdam → more structured, with exhibits and a pick-your-own section
De Tulperij → smaller, quieter, more local feel

All of these are within a short drive of Keukenhof, so you can easily mix and match.

Final Thoughts

This ended up being one of the most memorable days of our trip.

It’s beautiful, yes, but also surprisingly kid-friendly, which is what actually matters when you’re traveling as a family.

If you’re visiting Amsterdam in the spring, I would absolutely make time for this.
