“Two Wild” Safari Birthday Party at Turtle Back Zoo: What You Need to Know
When I started planning my son’s second birthday, I wanted something outdoors and fun for toddlers. Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ checked all the boxes and as magical as the day turned out, the party took serious planning, teamwork, and a little uphill cardio.
If you’re considering hosting your child’s birthday party at Turtle Back Zoo, I’ve got you covered with all the logistics, tips, and must-knows, plus a peek at our decor, food, and party favors that made the day extra special.

Why We Chose Turtle Back Zoo
Turtle Back Zoo is one of New Jersey’s top-rated family destinations. With over 200 species, a petting zoo, train rides, a carousel, and walkable paths, it’s the perfect place to turn a birthday into an all-day adventure. But what really sealed the deal? Their beautiful party spaces and the option to explore the zoo after your event wraps.
Tip
Turtle Back Zoo is extremely hilly! Bring a stroller, wear comfortable shoes, and plan ahead if you’ll be transporting supplies.
Booking the Gazebo at Turtle Back Zoo for a Birthday Party
We rented the Gazebo, a shaded, semi-covered party area nestled above the carousel. It fits up to 90 guests and includes 15 round tables, which made it great for both kids and adults.

Key info if you’re booking the Gazebo:
- Rental Fee: $200/hour
- Guest Admission: 15 guests entrance fee are included – you’ll need to purchase $15 tickets for any additional guests over the age of 2.
- Setup Time: You’re only allowed 30 minutes before your scheduled party time to set up (yes, it’s tight).
- Wheelbarrows Provided: Thank goodness. We had to lug all our decor, food, and supplies up a steep hill, and it truly took a team effort.
- No storage or refrigeration is available so plan accordingly!
- Garbage bins are available at the gazebo.
We hosted the early slot (10:30 AM–12:30 PM), which meant we were lifting bins of snacks, balloons, and backdrops uphill by 10 AM sharp. That climb? No joke. If you book the gazebo, wear sneakers and bring helpers. Multiple trips may be required.
Safari-Themed Party Decor + Setup Tips
- Theme: “Two Wild” Safari
- Backdrop & Decor: Custom jungle-themed backdrop and balloon garland from Silver Decor & Events
- Custom Outfits: Aydin wore a custom safari outfit from Etsy, and we rocked matching “King” and “Queen of the Jungle” shirts also from Etsy.
- Table Fun: We placed safari binoculars (Amazon find!) on each table so the kids could grab them and explore like mini adventurers.
- Party Favors: We gifted each child a custom Stanley-style tumbler with their name engraved by Just Jamie Designs. These personalized party favors were a HIT, so functional and adorable. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a unique kids’ birthday favor idea!
What We Served at Our Toddler Birthday Party
- Main Eats: Pizza and chicken nuggets (because: toddlers) from local favorite Bagels by Jarrett
- Dessert:
- Two-tier cannoli-filled cake from Angela’s Cakes
- Cupcakes + banana pudding shooters made with love by my sister
- Snacks & Drinks: Fruit, juice pouches, and plenty of toddler-approved treats
Things to Do at Turtle Back Zoo
After getting full on pizza and cake, it was time to enjoy the zoo itself. Aydin was wide-eyed the whole time. We saw cheetahs, leopards, and even giraffes. Highlights included:
- The petting zoo and farm area (bring quarters for feed!)
- The train ride around the zoo grounds
- The carousel
Pro Tip
Attractions close at different times and there are designated animal feeding times as well, so check the zoo schedule ahead of time and prioritize your must-sees.

Turtle Back Zoo Birthday Party Logistics: What to Know
Here are some key Turtle Back Zoo birthday logistics every parent should be aware of:

- Children under 2 and zoo members are free (but still count toward headcount).
- Outside catering is allowed.
- No balloons, open flames, or confetti.

Final Thoughts
Planning Aydin’s birthday at Turtle Back Zoo was equal parts effort and joy. Between the uphill treks and tight setup window, it wasn’t the easiest party I’ve ever thrown but it was absolutely worth it.
The smiles, the wild animal encounters, the adorable safari gear, it’s a memory we’ll hold onto forever.
