Complete Mt. Rigi Travel Guide: How to Get There, What to Do, and Kid Friendly Tips

If you’re planning a day trip to Mt. Rigi during your stay in Lucerne, you’re in for a breathtaking adventure involving boats, cogwheel trains, gondolas, and alpine views that feel straight out of a postcard. We did it with a toddler and it was not only doable, it was magical. Just pack some snacks, allow extra time for transitions, and embrace the slower pace.


Route Overview

  • Start: Lucerne
  • Transport: Boat to Vitznau → Cogwheel Train to Rigi Kulm (summit) → Optional cogwheel and aerial cable car to Rigi Scheidegg playground → Train back to Lucerne

You can buy tickets online here or directly at Lucerne’s boat terminal (next to Pier 1). With the Swiss Travel Pass, the tickets are fully covered.

Step-by-Step Route

  1. Boat from Lucerne to Vitznau
    Depart from Pier 1 (adjacent to the train station). Morning boats typically leave at 09:12, 10:12, 11:12, and 12:00. The boat ride is scenic and relaxing, with space to move around and enjoy the views.
  2. Cogwheel Train from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm
    This classic red cogwheel train climbs up to the summit of Mt. Rigi, stopping at several scenic points along the way. You can hop on or off at various stations—just ring the bell or notify the conductor.
  3. Top of Mt. Rigi – Rigi Kulm
    At the summit, take in panoramic views and enjoy a meal at the Kessiboden restaurant. We packed a lunch and found a peaceful spot to picnic while soaking in the views.
  4. Descent via Kaltbad
    Ride the cogwheel down to Rigi Kaltbad. This charming mountain village has spa options and several restaurants including:
    • Gratalp Stübli Restaurant
    • First Restaurant Bärenstube
    • Chalet Schild
    There’s also a small playground if you need a short break or spot to sit.This route is simple, scenic, and a great way to wind down after your visit to the summit.
  5. Return to Lucerne by Train
    From Rigi Kaltbad, take the cogwheel train down to Arth-Goldau. This leg of the journey is scenic and direct, offering beautiful views as you descend.At Arth-Goldau, transfer to a mainline SBB train heading to Lucerne. Trains run frequently and the ride takes about 30 minutes.This route is fully accessible via train and a great way to end your Mt. Rigi adventure—no buses or taxis needed!

Alternate Stop to Rigi Scheidegg Alpine Playground:

If you’re up for more adventure, upon your descent down from Mt. Rigi, you must stop at this amazing alpine playground at Rigi Scheidegg:

To get to there from the top of Rigi, start by descending from Rigi Kulm to Kräbel via the cogwheel train. At Kräbel, transfer to the Rigi Scheidegg aerial cable car, which takes you directly up to Rigi Scheidegg in just a few minutes. It’s an easy and scenic connection that avoids hiking and gives you access to one of the best alpine playgrounds in the region.

Rigi Scheidegg Playground:

Upon reaching Rigi Scheidegg, you’ll find a well-equipped playground featuring:

  • An adventure ship for imaginative play
  • Two sunken trampolines
  • Various climbing structures
  • Nearby picnic areas with benches and firewood
  • The Rigi Scheidegg Ark viewpoint offering 360° panoramic views

Continuing the Descent:

  • From Rigi Scheidegg, take the aerial cable car down to Kräbel.
  • At Kräbel, you can board the cogwheel train back to Arth-Goldau.
  • From Arth-Goldau, catch a train back to Lucerne to complete your round trip.
Tips

Bring layers! Weather changes quickly at altitude
A baby carrier is more practical than a stroller for most of the route
Pack snacks and water to keep little ones happy between stops
Bathrooms are available at most main stations (and clean!)
