Why Amsterdam Is Surprisingly One of the Most Kid-Friendly Cities in Europe

Amsterdam completely surprised me.

I went in thinking it would be a quick, pretty European stop, but it ended up being one of the most unexpectedly kid-friendly cities in Europe we’ve traveled to as a family.

Between the parks, walkability, playground culture, and laid-back food scene, Amsterdam just works with a toddler.

Playgrounds in Amsterdam

One of the reasons Amsterdam felt so effortless with Aydin is because the city is built for kids in a way that doesn’t feel forced.

You’ll find:

  • Small playgrounds tucked into almost every neighborhood
  • Play structures inside parks, cafés, and even near restaurants
  • Open green spaces where kids can safely run
  • Sand pits, climbing frames, swings, and mini rides scattered throughout the city

Where We Stayed in Amsterdam (Best Areas for Families)

When planning a family-friendly Amsterdam stay with a toddler, location matters more than anything. We split our stay between two hotels, and honestly I’d recommend doing this if you can.

It gave us a better feel for different parts of the city.

1. The Albus Hotel (City Center)

  • Located near the Canal Belt (Grachtengordel)
  • Very central and walkable
  • Easy access to restaurants, shopping, and canals
  • Great for shorter stays or if you want to be in the middle of everything

2. De Ware Jacob Boutique Hotel (Oud-Zuid / Museum Quarter)

  • Quiet, residential feel
  • Close to Vondelpark (huge win with a toddler)
  • Easy access to museums and wide, stroller-friendly streets
  • Much calmer compared to the city center

Best Areas to Stay in Amsterdam with Kids

If you’re booking a hotel or Airbnb, I’d focus on:

  • Oud-West (near Vondelpark) → best mix of local + family-friendly
  • Museum Quarter (Oud-Zuid) → clean, quiet, spacious
  • Jordaan → charming, but tighter streets (harder with strollers)

What actually matters most:

  • Walkability (non-negotiable with a toddler)
  • Proximity to parks or playgrounds
  • Access to tram lines
  • Avoiding overly crowded tourist zones

Getting Around Amsterdam with a Toddler

Car Service / Uber

We used this more than expected and it was worth it.

  • Easy airport transfers
  • Great for early mornings or longer distances
  • Way less stressful with luggage + toddler
  • Here is the company we used: Amsterdam Private Transfers

Public Transportation (Trams & Buses)

Amsterdam’s public transport is honestly one of the easiest in Europe.

  • Clean
  • Reliable
  • Very stroller-friendly
  • Simple to navigate

Perfect for short distances.

Biking (Honest Take)

Yes, Amsterdam is known for biking.

But here’s the real answer:

  • It can feel chaotic if you’re not used to it
  • Locals bike fast and confidently
  • Bikes always have the right of way

They do have bikes with child seats or cargo carriers, but personally, we skipped it this trip.

Things to Do in Amsterdam with a Toddler

Vondelpark (Must-Do)

This ended up being one of our favorite parts of the entire trip.

  • Massive green space in the middle of the city
  • Multiple playgrounds throughout the park
  • Cafés and restaurants scattered inside
  • Tons of space for kids to run freely

You’ll also find:

  • Sandboxes
  • Open fields
  • Small rides and play areas

We’d grab food, sit outside, and just let Aydin run around.

Keukenhof Gardens (Tulip Fields Day Trip)

If you’re visiting in spring, this is a must.

  • About 30–40 minutes from Amsterdam
  • Extremely stroller-friendly
  • Wide walking paths
  • Kid-friendly atmosphere despite being a major attraction

Canal Walks & Slow Exploring

Don’t over-plan this part.

Some of our best moments were just:

  • Walking along the canals
  • Stopping for snacks
  • Letting Aydin explore at his own pace

Amsterdam is one of those cities where you don’t need a packed itinerary to enjoy it.

Kid-Friendly Places to Eat in Amsterdam

Because let’s be honest, finding food with a toddler is half the battle.

Vondelpark Cafés

  • Outdoor seating
  • Playground right next to you
  • Kids can run while you eat

Stroopwafels (We went to Hans Egstorf)

A must.

  • Fresh, warm stroopwafels
  • Thin waffles with caramel filling
  • Way better than anything packaged

Albert Cuyp Market

  • Open-air street market
  • Casual, walk-and-eat vibe
  • Tons of options

We loved:

  • Poffertjes (mini pancakes)
  • Dutch snacks and street food

De Pizzabakkers

  • Casual, easy meal
  • Wood-fired pizza
  • They give kids dough to play with while you wait (huge win)

Foodhallen

A lifesaver.

  • Indoor food hall with tons of options
  • Perfect for groups or picky eaters
Tip

Go upstairs, there’s more space and it’s easier with kids.
